Superintendent Brenda Cassellius explains her plans to the School Committee

The Boston Public Schools have made little progress toward reaching goals that the School Committee set in 2014.

That’s the overall conclusion of a report that School Superintendent Brenda Cassellius gave the School Committee last week.

The goals were a key part of a “strategic vision” that the School Committee adopted in 2014 after what was described as “a rigorous, nearly 18-month process.” Four current School Committee members were involved in developing the report: Michael O’Neill, Hardin Coleman, Michael Loconto, and Jeri Robinson.

The 2014 document is still online here. It set six priorities covering curriculum, equity, parent engagement, and other areas. For each priority, the plan listed a set of “measurable goals.”

Cassellius’s review showed BPS doing better on a few of the “measurable goals,” worse on a few, and about the same on most.

Her summary of the plan and the full progress report are here. Slides 7 through 10 show what’s happened on the measures chosen in 2014.

Cassellius said she will propose updates to the plan after her tour of all BPS schools and a series of community meetings, which are scheduled to conclude in early December.

A birthday wish

The Committee ended its meeting August 28 with a celebration of member Jeri Robinson’s birthday.

Her birthday wish: “Full funding for every BPS school.”
